Derek and Liezel left unhappy marriages and found each other. They refuse to let complicated time-shares with the kids or their executive work responsibilities get in the way of fun.
Every year they attend AfrikaBurn in the Karoo, a “decommodified zone with a gift economy that’s about giving without expecting anything in return” (as described on the AfrikaBurn website). In the visually evocative setting of the African semi-desert, people burn effigies to achieve a desirable feeling that perhaps isn’t present in their ordinary lives.
We probe what this feeling is, and why couples like Team Diezel go to the ends of the earth to find it.
